The Nelson Family Christmas Lights in Cashmere

The Nelson Family Christmas Lights return each winter to brighten Cashmere with one of the most cherished holiday traditions in Chelan County. Created by Nick Nelson, the display features fifty five thousand synchronized lights set to music on 105.5 FM. Visitors simply park, tune in, and enjoy the full show from the comfort of their cars.

Now in its twelfth year, the display is built through long hours of volunteer work. After finishing the Halloween program, Nick spends evenings throughout November programming sequences, wiring lights, and preparing each musical moment. This year, several local high school seniors helped with the build, contributing volunteer hours toward their community service requirement for graduation. Their support helped bring the display together in time for its Thanksgiving opening.

Animated Characters That Bring the Music to Life

A group of animated singing lightbulbs sits near the front of the display, lighting up and reacting to the lyrics of each song. Their faces shift and brighten in time with the music, creating a playful chorus that immediately captures attention. Other elements across the yard join in as different songs begin, and children often point and laugh from the back seats as each character lights up.

These animated pieces give the show its warm, handmade charm. On busy nights, the front row of the lot can fill in about fifteen minutes as families settle in to enjoy the rotation of songs and synchronized lights. Despite its size, the entire season’s power cost remains surprisingly low thanks to efficient LED lighting.

Supported by Community and Powered by Volunteers

The display is made possible through strong community partnerships. The Port of Chelan County rents the property to the Cashmere Chamber of Commerce, which in turn provides the space so the Nelson family can continue hosting the show each year. Donations and small sales help support this long running tradition.
